By Ingrid Hastings
There are two essential keyword strategies that you should be using in order to create successful and profitable pay per click marketing campaigns. This article will discuss what these essential keyword strategies are.
This is but one of a collection of articles I've written about creating profitable Adwords campaigns. Look out for my other informative pay per click article tutorials.
Understanding The Basics Of Keyword Matching
Keyword matching refers to Adwords matching your chosen target keywords to the search queries that people are typing into the Google search engine. There are four types of keyword matching that Adwords operates under:
1. Broad match
2. Phrase match
3. Exact match
4. Negative match
What Is Broad Keyword Matching
When you include any keyword phrase in your keyword list your ads will appear for your terms in any order and also possibly with other search terms. Phrase and exact matches are much more targeted than broad match phrases.
A Caution About Broad Keyword Matching
While broad keyword matching bring in a lot of traffic this is usually very untargeted traffic. It's critical to rid of unwanted but very expensive searches by using negative keywords. For example if you are selling something you wouldn't want to pay for clicks from people who are looking for what you are selling but at no price. As they are looking ultimately for free stuff even if they click they are likely not going to buy from you.
What Is Phrase Keyword Matching
Phrase keyword matching is useful when you are wanting to target specific word combinations. Phrase keyword matching will make your ad appear whenever the precise phrase is searched for and also when the keywords contain additional keywords with it.
What Is Exact Keyword Matching
Exact keyword matching is the most specific type of keyword matching. Your ad will only appear if the precise keywords are searched for. This means if there are additional keywords searched for in the phrase your ad won't appear. For this reason it's a good idea to use a few phrase matching and broad matching keywords as well.
Negative Keyword Matching
One of the most frequently used negative keywords is free. As well as free you may come across other terms that you don't want to target and waste your money on. Be very choosey when using negative keywords.
This is how to type in these keywords in your Google adwords account:
broad match: keyword as it is
phrase match: your keyword in quotes ""
exact match: your keyword in square brackets []
negative match: your keyword with a minus sign -
Peel And Sticking Keywords
If your time and budget is limited when starting out with pay per click marketing campaigns start with just a small number of ad groups as this will make your pay per click management much easier. Monitoring your keywords is absolutely critical when first start with pay per click marketing.
Write two good ads in your ad group. A good guide is to just have a different headline. Place several related keywords in the group and split test the ads. You only really need to do this for about 30 clicks each or so.
In your monitoring you will notice that some keywords are bringing in much more traffic than others. Now is the time to peel the most profitable keywords and stick them in their own ad group.
Why?
If you are able to write a specific ad just for each of these high performing keywords you will increase your click through rate.
Increasing your click through rate will do four things for you:
1. it will lower the price you're paying for each visitor to your landing page.
2. it will get more visitors to your landing page to view your sales pitch.
3. you will presell your visitor better before they get to your landing page and increase your chance of a sale.
4. you will increase your quality score.
By implementing these fundamentals you will be way ahead of your pay per click competitors.
